Melissa Benoist as Supergirl in Statue Form

The Supergirl TV series that first aired on CBS in 2015-2016 before moving to The CW for subsequent seasons has experienced a lot of uneven storytelling issues.  Lead Melissa Benoist keeps the show watchable through sheer charisma.  She's one of those rare "perfect fit" castings, when a performer makes it difficult to imagine anyone else in a particular role.

Unfortunately, Benoist also seems to be the perfect example of how difficult it is to make statues based on real people.  This problem can be seen with statues made from PVC and resin/polystone.

Here's an early promo image with Benoist in the "arms akimbo" pose:

DC Collectibles probably used this photo as the basis for their first 1/6-scale resin prototype:

Yikes!  Aside from the hair being too light, the face doesn't look like Benoist at all.  The statue was delayed from its initial release date by several months, and I was so relieved to see the updated face sculpt!

This version looks great, though the facial expression is also much more serious than Supergirl's usually is on the show.  I also like the fabric cape, which allows me to do this with a fan:

You would think that other companies learned from DC's travails, but alas, subsequent statues don't look like Benoist.  Kotobukiya's 1/10-scale ArtFX+ PVC statue looks like Caity Lotz, who plays Sara Lance on DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Caity Lotz

Icon Heroes got ambitious and made a 1/9-scale polystone statue based on a flying pose poster promoting Season 1.  The face lacks fine detail.

Diamond Select Toys tried their hand with a 1/7-scale PVC statue.  The prototype looks kinda/sorta okay...but then you see the final production piece in person.

I guess the Funko Rock Candy will have to suffice as my Happy Supergirl for the time being.
