Earlier today, I admitted that I don't really follow the Green Lanterns or buy statues of them.  However, I have most of the Bombshells statues already, and I'm a big fan of sculptor Jack Mathews.  As such, I have finally added the Jessica Cruz statue to my collection.

This statue was released more than a year ago, but I was concerned about potential breakage issues after seeing pictures on Instagram, eBay, and Amazon.  Prices remained close to MSRP and then began rising into the $150-$200 range.  I got lucky when I saw a good deal about two weeks ago.

The two halves of the Styrofoam brick aren't labeled, so be careful when you open it.  The half with the cut/slanted corner should be placed on the bottom.  That way, the traffic cones and nameplate don't fall out of their compartments.  The traffic cones aren't attached to the base, so you can display them as you see fit (or just keep them inside the box).

The design, presenting a Green Lantern as a traffic cop, is clever.  The sculptwork is phenomenal.  The face is very pretty, and the body is very attractive as per the Bombshells theme.  Cruz isn't standing straight, but she appears to be about 9.75-inches tall.  This would make her slightly more than 5'8" "in real life".

As is usual with smaller statues, paint QC is a bit hit-&-miss.  Overall, the statue looks nice, but there are some stray marks.  One of the shirt buttons is smudged.  The eyes weren't painted evenly.  Considering how unlikely it is that we'll get another Jessica Cruz statue in any line, I'm happy with the copy that I got.

First things first -- I admit that I'm only a (very) casual fan of the Green Lanterns and their associated characters.  It's difficult for me to think the characters are in any danger since they can conjure just about any object with their rings.  Also, animated movies and TV shows frequently depict Lanterns making oversized versions of ordinary objects, such as baseball gloves, which makes them look silly or even goofy.

With regards to statues, many of them usually include lanterns...which is why I avoid them.  I know they're called Green/Yellow/Red/Blue/etc. Lanterns and not Green/Yellow/Red/Blue/etc. Rings, but these characters don't wield lanterns in combat.  Also, it's easy for the lanterns to break in transit.  Diamond Select Toys released an attractively-priced PVC statue with plastic layers that simulate a constructed costume, but the execution isn't as cool as the idea.

In many ways, then, the DC Designer Series Green Lantern Hal Jordan statue is the perfect Green Lantern statue for me.  It has a simple, uncluttered design.  The character is depicted in a striking action pose.  He's not holding a lantern that might cause me sleepless nights.

Since Hal Jordan isn't standing upright, I measured various body parts from the top of the head to the left boot heel.  He appears to be 11.5-inches tall.  This would make Jordan about 5'9" tall "in real life".  The statue's overall height from the bottom of the base to the top of the right hand is roughly 12.5-inches.

My copy has a tiny chip on the right boot.  Fortunately, this minor flaw isn't noticeable under normal display conditions.  I'm not gonna complain since I got this statue for less than what I've paid for smaller statues.  :)

DC Direct Wonder Woman #600 Statue Review

I've wanted to add a Wonder Woman with long pants statue to my collection for quite some time.  I even considered making my own variant using one of the New 52 statues (Cover Girls Wave 2, Cover Girls Wave 3, DC Icons) that DC Collectibles has released.  However, recently, I got the Wonder Woman #600 statue, and it fills the "gap" in my collection just fine.

Even though it's called the #600 statue, it's actually based on a cover for Issue #601.  This statue is not officially part of the Adam Hughes Cover Girls wave, but it was sculpted by Jack Mathews during the same time frame.  (Mathews sculpted all of the Hughes Cover Girls.)  This is a 1/8-scale statue, the same as the Waves 1 - 3 Cover Girls.  Furthermore, the product box advertises the Cover Girls line.

This statue is an interesting case study because the final production piece has eyes that are noticeably different from the prototype's eyes.  On the proto, the eyes are looking straight ahead, whereas on the production piece, the eyes are looking upwards.  I admit that the eyes once bothered me, but I got used to them as I looked at eBay listings during the past few years.

Even though the Edition Size of 7000 is larger than DC's recent 5200/5000 numbers, this statue usually sells for double its MSRP on the secondary market.  I know most people consider Wonder Woman's exposed thighs to be part of her "appearance", but surely she gets cold like the rest of us from time to time?  :)  Judging by how much this statue has appreciated in value, I assume that other collectors feel the same way as I do.

The statue comes in one piece, no assembly required.  I felt some "give" when I lifted the statue out of the Styrofoam brick, so I suggest handling the statue by the base to minimize any potential rocking motions that might separate the feet from the Greek ruins.  Mathews included some nice detailing on the base, such as "carvings" that might appear on ancient Greek buildings.  The jacket and corset have lots of sculpted detail as well.  I measured Wonder Woman from the bottom of her right ankle to the top of her head; she appears to be between 8.5- and 8.75-inches tall, which would make her 5'8" to 5'10" "in real life".
