Kotobukiya ArtFX Wonder Woman 1984 Statue Review

When I first started collecting statues back in 2016, I bought some of Kotobukiya's Bishoujos because they were cute.  However, I soured on the company because the materials they used caused the paint to feel sticky.  There were even instances of the paint becoming liquid enough again to run.  Paint problems were usually found on one of the Wonder Woman Bishoujos, though they occurred with others, too (such as the first release of grey Batgirl).

In 2017, when I saw excess glue on the ArtFX Gal Gadot Wonder Woman 1/6-scale statue, I decided to sell all of my Kotobukiya statues.

Well, here we are, October 2022 ... and I'm reviewing a Kotobukiya statue.  I haven't seen anyone complaining about QC problems with the company's products in a while, so I decided to get the ArtFX Wonder Woman 1984 1/6-scale statue.  I wanted a statue showing Wonder Woman using the Lasso of Truth rather than just holding it in a static pose (usually coiled in a loop).  There are plenty of Wonder Woman statues showing her with a sword and shield combo, so this one was a welcome change.

The box (14 inches x 12 inches x 11 inches) is probably a tad big for the statue, but that's a minor complaint.

The statue is encased within three plastic trays.  The main body fits between the two large trays, and the hands/lasso are nestled in a thin tray tucked behind the "back" / "bottom" of the large trays.  Kotobukiya included assembly instructions for the hands/lasso, though you probably won't need to read them.  And yes, the base is shaped like a W, lol.

I measured the lower leg (from the right ankle to the right knee), right thigh to right shoulder, and neck/head areas for a statue "height" of 11.5 inches.  That would make Wonder Woman 69 inches, or 5 foot, 9 inches tall.  That's pretty close to Gal Gadot's real-life height of 5 feet, 10 inches.

When in-hand photos began appearing on the Internet, some people complained about the head being too big compared to the rest of the body, but I think it looks fine.  I think the hair sculpt showcases PVC's biggest advantage over resin/porcelain/polystone as any harder material tends to be brittle and easy to crack compared to plastic.

In general, the paint and colors seem to be pretty good.  I did not feel any sticky or wet areas.  I was surprised to see some faint liver spots in the "flesh" areas, though they're not as noticeable as on the BvS / Justice League Wonder Woman statues from DC Collectibles.

Alas, the statue isn't quite perfect as I noticed a bit of a gap between the upper torso and belt area.

Here are some comparison shots with Wonder Woman / Gal Gadot statues from DC Direct and Diamond Select Toys.  As far as facial likeness goes, I think the Wonder Woman / Steve Trevor couples statue has the best resemblance to Gal Gadot, though James Marsano got multiple tries at getting it right since he sculpted so many movie statues for DC Direct.  :)

DC Direct Bombshells Harley Quinn Deluxe 2 (High Striker) Statue Review

Before Warner forced DC Comics to downsize DC Direct / subcontract services to McFarlane Toys and before the COVID-19 pandemic, the MSRP for single-character Bombshells statues was $125.  The MSRP for two-character couples statues was $250.  The Deluxe Harley Quinn and Deluxe Wonder Woman statues, with fancy, individualized bases, were priced at $200 each.

 

DC and McFarlane have set the MSRP for this new Bombshells High Striker Harley Quinn statue at $250.  I understand that we have to deal with inflation due to a variety of factors, but $250 is a tough pill to swallow for a single-character statue -- especially when the base is mostly a circular disc similar to what was used for previous Bombshells statues.  I got this statue only because Amazon is offering it for $150 (40% discount).  Unfortunately, right now, there's a 1-2 month wait for replenishment.  Most other places are selling it for MSRP or higher(!).

The statue comes in four pieces -- Harley Quinn, a mallet, the base, and the high striker tower.  The statue has an oddly specific edition size of 5004.  Alas, mine is missing a "jewel" along the side of the base.

Most of the Bombshells statues have been based on art by Ant Lucia, but this one is based on Emanuela Lupacchino's cover for New 52 Secret Six Issue 5.

Lupacchino basically draws her own face in her artwork, and I think the head sculpt is a fairly good approximation of Lupacchino.  I'm glad that sculptor Tim Miller no longer gives these statues huge eyes that are not proportional to other facial features.

The mallet has a notch on the handle so that it can be positioned at a specific length in Harley's hands.  The statue has one peg in the right foot.  Aside from the missing jewel, the build and paint quality are very good.

Alas, the eyes are a bit sloppy.  Mine has a chipped right eye and incompletely painted left eye.

As nice as this statue is, I wish that she had been posed either perpendicularly to or facing the high striker tower.  You may want to buy a wood block from a crafts shop to display her like this:
