Designed and Sculpted by Jonathan Matthews

Jonathan Matthews is usually a sculptor, but he's worked with DC Direct / Collectibles for so long that DC asked him to design his own Batman B&W Statue.  This statue features the sharp angles and deep cuts / chiseled look often associated with Matthews's sculpting style.  When it was released, it sold pretty quickly, and I wasn't able to get one until today.  More than four years later, I was able to find one for MSRP at a brick-and-mortar store.

This statue was released in one of those DC Direct 20th Anniversary boxes with an angled corner.  Unfortunately, this is also one of those statues that are stored "upside down" because the Styrofoam brick fits only one way into the product box.  There's a metal peg at the bottom of the cape that fits into the familiar oval base.

The statue has an overall height of about 9.5-inches, thanks to the exaggerated cape.

Build and paint QC are very good, though you may see a bit of excess glue in a few places.  Matthews gave this Batman a cloth sash and what appear to be chemistry lab vials, so the statue has a retro and even vaguely Oriental vibe.

I've always wondered if Matthews treated his own statue as a study / test run for the Sean Murphy "White Knight" Batman statue that was released the following year in 2019.
